Step 1: Review Course Layout and Materials
Before making changes in D2L, review the current course organization and materials. Identify what is working well, what needs to be updated, and begin to think about how content, assignments, and assessments can be organized into a weekly layout.
Review Course Layout

Review Course Materials
- Can remain as-is.
- Need to be updated or replaced.
- Span multiple weeks.
- Need to be divided across weeks, or combined within a week.
- Can be removed.
- Have noted accessibility issues (check the Ally score).
Step 2: Plan Course Schedule and Update Materials
Develop a week-by-week instructional plan that maps content, assignments, and assessments. Update content as needed to align with the weekly layout.
Plan Each Week
- Identify the topics or concepts students will focus on each week.
- Identify required readings, videos, lectures, and instructional materials.
- Identify assignments, discussions, quizzes, exams, and assessments.
- Identify supporting resources, examples, practice activities, and supplemental materials.
- Determine due dates and consider how student workload is distributed throughout the semester.
Update Course Materials

Step 3: Build Weekly Layout in D2L
Use the completed Course Schedule as a guide to organize content, assignments, and assessments into clearly labeled weekly modules in D2L. Review the course from the student perspective to ensure clear navigation, accessibility, and a consistent weekly flow.
Build the Course in D2L
- Add a description to each weekly module.
- For course materials that span multiple weeks, link the file in multiple spots throughout the course.
- Organize materials in the order students should complete them.
