Coming Soon! Email Changes in D2L

Coming Soon! Email Changes in D2L

Starting May 13, 2026, faculty and students will no longer need to check email in two accounts. Faculty LCC email will be integrated with D2L, so that you receive all your email in your LCC Outlook account. Students will receive all their email in their LCC Gmail account.

How will email in D2L change for faculty?

Faculty will still be able to send emails from within D2L, using features such as Classlist and Compose Email, but D2L will become a “send only” environment. You will receive and reply to email only in your LCC Outlook account.

Emails you send using D2L will be delivered to students’ Gmail accounts. Similarly, email that students send to you through D2L will arrive in your Outlook account. Once the initial email is sent from D2L, all further conversation will take place solely in Outlook and/or Gmail.

Why is LCC making this change?

The President’s Enrollment Management Taskforce , which met throughout 2024, identified dual email accounts as a key barrier to effective communication, especially for students, causing confusion and a lot of missed messages over the years.

How can faculty prepare for this change?

On May 13, 2026, all the email in your D2L inbox, custom folders, and trash will be deleted and neither eLearning nor ITS will be able to retrieve them for you. We strongly recommend you take three actions now to make this change easier!

  1. Set up email forwarding from your D2L account to your Outlook account. You will only receive email in Outlook beginning May 13, 2026, but by forwarding now, rather than at the last minute, it will give you an entire year of emails saved in your Outlook. For step-by-step instructions, visit Email Forwarding in D2L or view the Email Forwarding in D2L video .
Note: Faculty who currently forward their email outside of D2L do not need to set up a new email forward.
  2. Manually save important emails in your D2L inbox, custom folders, or trash before May 13, 2026 by forwarding emails to your LCC Outlook account. All your Sent Mail will remain in D2L.
  3. Send email from the Classlist to automatically populate the course title and CRN into the email subject line. Encourage students to also send email from the Classlist or to include the course title and CRN in the email subject line.
Note: Faculty can choose to create folders or rules in Outlook for their inbound emails; however, these will only work if inbound emails meet the parameters set for the rule. For example, if faculty have set a rule to filter by CRN, and a student does not include the CRN in the subject, the email will appear in the Inbox, not the designated folder.

How will email change for students?

Just like faculty, students will be able to send emails from within D2L, using features such as Classlist and Compose Email. D2L will be a “send only” environment, and students will receive and reply to all their email in their LCC Gmail account.

Emails sent by students will be delivered to faculty’s LCC Outlook account. Students will reply to faculty from within Gmail and it will be received in faculty’s LCC Outlook account.

Do I have to use D2L at all to send emails?

No, you have the ability to compose and send messages from either Outlook or D2L. However, D2L offers the advantage of automatically including the course title and CRN in the subject line, making it easier to identify the course that email pertains to. Also, D2L is integrated with Banner, it always reflects your most current Classlist, so if you use D2L, you’ll have access to the most up-to-date roster for contacting students.
