What's Changing?

What’s happening to email in D2L?

Starting May 13, 2026, D2L email will become send-only. You’ll still be able to send emails using tools like Classlist or Compose Email, but you’ll receive and reply to all emails in your LCC Outlook account, not in D2L.

Why is LCC making this change?

To reduce confusion and improve communication, especially for students. Right now, students are expected to check both D2L and Gmail, and faculty are expected to check both D2L and Outlook. By moving all replies and incoming messages to Gmail for students and Outlook for faculty, everything’s in one place, making it easier to keep track.

Why should I forward my D2L email to Outlook now?

On May 13, 2026, D2L will become send-only, and you will no longer receive emails there. Setting up forwarding now ensures your incoming D2L messages are automatically saved in Outlook for the next year, helping preserve communication records during the transition.

What if I already have D2L email forwarding set up?

If you’re currently forwarding your D2L emails outside of D2L (e.g., to Outlook), you're all set, no need to change anything.

What happens to my existing D2L emails after May 2026?

All emails stored in your D2L inbox, custom folders, and trash will be permanently deleted. Neither eLearning nor ITS will be able to recover them. If you wish to keep any messages, forward them manually to your Outlook account before the deadline.

How do I access instructions for setting up forwarding my D2L email?

For step-by-step instructions, visit Email Forwarding in D2L or view the Email Forwarding in D2L video .

Why send email from D2L vs Outlook?

Why should I still use D2L to send emails after May 2026?

  • It automatically includes the course title and CRN in subject lines.
  • It uses the up-to-date Classlist (linked to Banner), ensuring emails go to the right students.

These features streamline communication, especially across multiple courses or sections.

Do I have to use D2L to send course emails?

No, you have the ability to compose and send messages from either Outlook or D2L. However, D2L offers the advantage of automatically including the course title and CRN in the subject line, making it easier to identify the course that email pertains to. Also, D2L is integrated with Banner, it always reflects your most current Classlist, so if you use D2L, you’ll have access to the most up-to-date roster for contacting students.

What email system will I be using to receive and reply to students?

All incoming email from students will go to your LCC Outlook account. After the initial message sent through D2L, any replies from students will come from their LCC Gmail and be in your Outlook Inbox.

Can I organize incoming student emails in Outlook?

Yes. You can create folders or rules in Outlook to sort student emails. For best results, ask students to send emails from D2L or include the course title and CRN in the subject line so rules apply correctly.

What happens if a student replies without including the CRN?

If your Outlook rule depends on the CRN in the subject line and it's missing, the email will appear in your general inbox rather than a designated folder. Encourage students to use the Classlist tool or include course identifiers in the subject line.
