Course design focuses on the forethought and planning of a course as a whole, as well as the individual elements of a course. Approaching course design holistically can help to ensure the overall course meets the intended goal(s) through evident alignment and support of the student learning outcomes. While course design is not a one-size-fits-all approach, there are common elements that should be present in all courses.

The D2L Course Design Guidelines are designed to assist instructors with the planning, design, and delivery of courses in D2L, and are available to download, view and use as an interactive checklist.

The guidelines focus on 10 key elements of course design and delivery, including:

  • Student Learning Outcomes
  • Assessment Evidence/Learning Experiences
  • Universal Design for Learning and Accessibility
  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
  • D2L Course Shell Setup and Layout
  • Course Overview and Introduction
  • Facilitation and Instruction
  • Interaction, Communication, Engagement
  • Course Technology and Tools
  • Course Summary and Wrap-Up
