Summer 2020 Start of Semester Information Students – Text Version

As we approach the start of the summer 2020 semester, the eLearning Department would like to provide some helpful tips and information to Students.

First, a new option, Beeline Reader, has been added to the Alternative Formats menu found next to Content topics in D2L courses. Beeline Reader uses an eye-guiding color gradient to pull your eyes from one line to the next, assisting with reading text online, with different color schemes selectable by the user. Beeline Reader can be accessed from the Alternative Formats menu found next to Content topics in D2L courses.

Second, a reminder that every student has access to Google Apps. Your student Gmail account provides access to Google Apps, which provides access to software for creating documents and presentations, collaborating with other students, and storing files. Google Apps are also integrated into D2L, allowing users to link their LCC Google Apps account to D2L and have quick access to LCC Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive, as well as allowing students to submit a file directly from Google Drive to an Assignment Folder in D2L. Instructions for Linking Google Apps and D2L can be found on the eLearning Student Resource Site by visiting the link below.

Third, students are able to sign up for notifications in D2L in order to receive notifications about course activity, such as edited content, new discussion posts, new grades, and when an assignment or quiz is approaching the due date. Notifications can be sent as email or text messages to your phone and the types of notifications can be customized. Instructions for setting notifications in D2L can be found on the eLearning Student Resource Site by visiting the link below.

Fourth, new for the Summer 2020 semester, students are able to self-enroll in the Learning Online in D2L Training. The Learning Online in D2L Training takes students through the basics of using D2L, as well as exploring the expectations that come with being an online student. Students are able to select Trainings from the Online Tools menu on the My Home page of D2L, select the Learning Online in D2L training from the Discover menu, and then select Enroll in Course to add the training to their My Courses widget in D2L.

Fifth, throughout the summer semester, your instructors may ask you to use tools in D2L that you may not have used before, such as WebEx for online office hours & class sessions, and Kaltura for creating and submitting videos for assignments. Please know that the eLearning Student Resource Site has dedicated resource pages for each of these tools to help students make the transition to online courses and our staff are ready to assist students with the use of these tools in D2L.

And finally, the eLearning Department is available remotely to assist students with D2L. Students can continue to contact the eLearning Department by phone, email, and live chat as well as access on-demand resources through the eLearning Student Resource Site. The eLearning Department’s staff is available to assist students with D2L and the continuation of courses online.
